Haha. My name is Marsha (they have changed the way this guestbook thing works so I have to use the site name) Yes I lived in number 9 Rugby Terrace. We moved threre right after the modernisation. The name High Clarence did tend to be forgotten a lot over the years and the whole place became known as just Port and as I said it is now more commonly known as the Clarences but I always have and still prefer to call this end High Clarence cos it sounds posher haha. I'd love it if you could send any photo's you have that I could add to the site
Hi portclarence Thank you for the music... (getting rid of! :-) Nice idea, but... So you lived in Rugby Terrace! I have a photo somewhere of Mum standing outside the house at the age of about 4 (c1929). She always said it was High Clarence, and as this sounded a bit posher than Port Clarence, I did wonder whether it was just a leetle bit of snobbishness creeping in! Glad to hear I was misjudging her motives all this time. I'll keep popping back - thanks for the reply.
Hi Howard, thank you for commenting, I'm glad you like the site and I hope you'll pop back a few months down the line as I hope to add more pages. I lived in Rugby Terrace myself from the age 8 until 16. The houses were modernised in c1987 and they all kept their original names except Eaton Terrace, Oxford Terrace and Harrow Terrace which were renamed as Fieldview Close, Saltholme Close and Meadowdale Close, those 3 streets became private houses and another street was built between Fieldview Close and the Queens Head pub (now demolished) this street was named Limetree's Close and is also private houes. Rugby Terrace is in High Clarence though the area is now more commonly known as The Clarences rather than Port and High. High was classed as the half before the school and closest to Haverton Hill and Port was the other end after the schhol. PS. I've killed the music, I had been meaning too anyway :-)
Nice site (but please kill the music! :-) My mother (nee McDonnell) was born in 1925 and lived in Rugby Terrace until she moved away at around the age of five. Her father was killed in an industrial accident at that time (at what became ICI) so her mother moved her and her brother back to her native Derbyshire. It looks as though all the terraced houses have been redeveloped, but the street names have been retained. Is Rugby Terrace in Port or High (or Haverton Hill?) The church on your Profile page was near where they lived.
Thanks for joining! There are old maps around on the internet & I'll find out where as soon as I have time. I'm sure some of the other members here will be able to help you further. There is still a Saltholme Close here but I'm not sure of Saltholme Terrace though I'm sure someone will know of it. I'm glad you've enjoyed the site so far & hopefully some time soon I'll have more time to work at it and add more exciting stuff. Thanks again
What a fabulous website! I have been researching my family history and my grandma's family came from Port, I can't wait to show her all this! She is one of the Woodcocks, who in turn came from the Taggarts another of the iron worker families from County Tyrone. Does anyone know if there are any old streetmaps showing Port Clarence? I'm particularly interested in knowing where Saltholme Terrace, Newby Terrace and Martin Street used to be. Thanks again for a great and fascinating website
