Port Clarence changes

Port & High Clarence - The Clarences & Haverton Hill

Haverton Hill had a great Community spirit. In the days before televisions and central heating children would play out rather than huddle in the only heated room of the house with their parents, usually the living room!

My Mother was born in Young Street in the same house as the footballer Willie Maddren. She says it was the best place in the world to live. People didn't have much but what they did have they shared. Parents looked out for each others children and doors were never locked, some people didn't even have keys!. There was plenty to do with the many shops, the skating rink called Victory hall, the cinema and the many activities which went on in the church or just playing games such as Canon, Whip & top, 2 ball and skipping.

Haverton Hill became a parish in 1960
